Our Visits

Visit to Liverpool - 25th February, 2025

We are very pleased to offer you an excursion to Liverpool to enjoy the Walker Art Gallery and a textile exhibition at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.  This has been arranged for Tuesday, 25th February, 2025 and includes door to door coach travel.

WALKER ART GALLERY “RENAISSANCE REDISCOVERD”

There are a limited number of places on a private guided tour of the newly renovated Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque rooms.  Hear the tour guide reveal the fascinating stories behind the masterpieces by giants of European art.  The tour starts at 10.30 and lasts one hour. The coach will drop us off at the Walker Art Gallery at 10.15.  The cost of the tour is £6.00 and is limited to 25 people.  The gallery has a wide collection including paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the 13th century to the present day. Artists include, Reubens, Turner, Rembrandt, Stubbs, Millais, Rossetti, Monet, Degas, and Hockney and much more. Please indicate if you would like a place on the tour when you book your place.

LIVERPOOL ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL

The coach will leave the gallery at 12.30 to drive the short distance to the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.  When you arrive at the cathedral you will
have plenty of time to visit the many artworks and sculptures in the cathedral.  You can also book a place on the “Liverpool Cathedral tower Experience” which allows you to see all of Liverpool’s great buildings as you take in a breathtaking 360˚ view from the rooftop of the highest cathedral in the UK – 152m (500ft) above sea level. On a
good clear day, you will see Blackpool Tower! If you would like to include this experience on your visit, please book this directly with the cathedral.

The main attraction for this visit is the stunning textile exhibition by Manchester born artist Jackie Parkinson, “Threads through the Bible”. More than 40 beautiful silk panels standing 3 metres high make up the trilogy of tapestries. (Including Threads through Creation which was on tour at Blackburn Cathedral in 2024). The installation at the UK’s largest cathedral has taken ten years to produce with more than 25 million stitches.  The exhibition is free to visit.

The coach will leave the Garner hotel Samlesbury at 9.00 am and arrive at the Walker Art Gallery around 10.15.  The coach will pick up at the Walker Art
Gallery at 12.30 for the short drive to the cathedral and will leave there at 4.00 pm to arrive back in Samlesbury at 5.30 (dependent on traffic)

Visit to Glyndebourne
19 - 21 October, 2024

“A full-on weekend”

From Canons Ashby, a Tudor manor house in Northamptonshire, to the opulent splendour of Brighton Pavilion, and on to the wonderful arts and crafts home of the Beale Family at Standen House – “A creative masterpiece furnished by Morris and Co.”  It was as one of our members said, “A full on weekend”.  The main feature of our three-day trip was to visit Glyndebourne to see, “La Traviata”.  No longer do the heroines stride across the stage like a galleon in full sail, looking far too robustly healthy for audiences to even vaguely consider that they are dying of consumption.  Our Violetta, played by Italian Soprano Elisa Verzier, gave a heartbreaking performance of the doomed party girl.  Whip thin, but with a wonderful voice.  At the end, our party furtively dabbed away the odd tear.  One of our group said, “the opera itself was the icing on the cake – I will never forget it.”  After the opera, we had supper at the theatre.  The food was good, as was the organisation by the Glyndebourne team.

We had set off at 6.30 am on Saturday October 19, arriving back in Samlesbury at around 7.30 on the Monday evening. The coach had then taken Fylde members on for the last leg of their journey.  Although we had only been away for two nights, it had seemed much longer, as we had packed so much in to our three days.  The only question, at the end was, “Where are we going next?”

Visit to Tennants on 10th July, 2024

Society members had a great day out at Tennants.  We were treated to a video of the history of Tennants – a fourth generation family business, an insight into the preparation for an auction and able to view many items waiting for sale – not to mention an excellent lunch!  All in all a memorable, interesting and unusual day.

Visit to Chatsworth on 24th August, 2022

Those who came on the Chatsworth visit on 24th August, 2022 enjoyed a wonderful day out in the Derbyshire countryside.  The weather was kind and the exhibitions, both inside the house and out, were unusual and impressive.  Our day was made all the more enjoyable by the warm welcome from Chatsworth staff and the luxurious coach driven by humorous driver!  Here are a few pictures of the day.
